The joy of UX

I’m a usability and user experience enthusiast. I like to talk about it whenever I get the chance, especially with colleagues who haven’t yet experienced the joy of UX.

Here are some of the things I’ve done to spread the word.

UX writing mentoring

I volunteered for an internal programme as a UX writing mentor and was paired with a product owner.

My mentee provided a list of goals for his product, and we prioritised them together. I shared strategies to achieve the goals, for example where and how to conduct content research specifically for his product, and how to create a glossary of terminology to share with engineers.

The mentoring programme lasted six months. After our initial session, we had monthly catch-ups to discuss progress and strategies, with ad hoc chats in between when needed.

The mentee can now confidently propose terminology for new features, backed up by research and testing.

My role as lead UX writer was to review two related websites and design the content for a new combined website.

Spoiler alert: this was a huge project and it was clear that we wouldn’t be able to finish the redesign in the two consecutive days set aside for the hackathon. Because we needed (and wanted) to complete the UX challenge before the related engineering hackathon the following week, the lead UX team volunteered additional hours of our own time before the hackathon officially began. It was a race against the clock, but with the support of other team members we were able to provide a complete set of tested mockups by the end of the hackathon.

I’ve represented the UX writing team at several internal events, demonstrating our impact on information architecture and interaction design, and showing the value of content design to product managers, engineers and senior managers. This has helped to increase our UX maturity.

In 2025, I proposed, organised and hosted a UX booth with interactive games and activities, including a live linkup for a meet-and-greet with colleagues at another site.

As part of a small team of UX writers, we reviewed the RACI matrix for the product life cycle, and proposed where we should be responsible, accountable, consulted or informed.

Thank you to my colleagues for these unsolicited testimonials.
